We all know the feeling, as we age it seems to become harder to keep weight off. It is assumed that as we age, our metabolism slows (the rate at which we burn calories at rest).
However, this common misconception has been overthrown by a groundbreaking study published by the Pennington Biomedical Research Center at Louisiana State University.
In the study, over 6,600 people ranging from 1 week old to 95 were tested to see how quickly their bodies processed a water-based solution containing oxygen and hydrogen. The results were surprising across the spectrum of ages. It indicated that infants “burn calories 50 percent faster for their body size than adults” and from infancy our metabolic rate decreases 3% per year until we reach the age of 20. But – from here until our late 50’s our metabolism doesn’t seem to alter, stabilising for four decades.
So if our metabolism does not slow down with age, why do we get middle-aged spread?
The loss of muscle-mass as we age is partly responsible, as muscle burns more calories than fat but this is by no-means the whole picture. With metabolism out of the picture, we will focus on the other factors affecting our bodies as we go into middle-age:
- Stress is likely to be increased during this time, whether it be from children, careers or ageing parents
- Sleep patterns are disturbed and can result in overeating from tiredness or reaching for sugary snacks to boost energy levels
- A decreased desire to exercise or leading a more sedentary lifestyle
What’s the upside?
It’s not all doom and gloom though, this also shows that we have more control over our weight than we previously thought. So what can you do to combat weight gain as you age?
- Lift weights to prevent muscle loss as we age 1-2 times per week
- Get moving every day – even a 30 minute walk does wonders for your physical and mental health
- Hydrate – aim for 8 glasses of water a day – that’s around 2 litres
- Eat a balanced diet with adequate protein
- Take actions to reduce stress
- Get enough sleep
